Lorraine Brooker–Mays started her career in a knife throwing act, trying to gain her Equity Card, in a UK – wide touring circus. At six foot tall she was too tall to fit in a magician’s magic illusion, having auditioned as an assistant after advertising herself in The Stage and Television Newspaper looking for a role in variety.
Having had elocution and drama training through L.A.M.D.A (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) for many years under the guidance of teacher Angela Ingrams, Lorraine was not deterred in her mission to capture her all important Equity Card.
Armed with an abundance of drive, talent, initiative and enthusiasm to perform, with her back ground in child-care (having worked as a nanny to the late Pope’s nephew), she combined all her skills and became Rainbow Bigbottom.
In 1988 Rainbow Bigbottom, the character was created and become quickly the energetic, charming, larger than life, children’s personality. A strong sense of dramatic timing, stage presence, love of children and theatre has kept Rainbow Bigbottom focused on her career for the past twenty years, she is now becoming a national children’s and family favourite.
The name “Rainbow Bigbottom” was chosen after several months and has set the tone of the whole production company, being silly, funny memorable and appealing to children everywhere. Rainbow Bigbottom has delighted thousands of children, including royalty, with exuberance, energy and fun.
Since cuddly Mr Panda joined the act they have travelled extensively throughout the UK and overseas, entertaining families in venues, theatres and appearing at various functions for children’s charities.
Because of her innate understanding of children and talent in writing and producing children’s stories, her material can be adapted to suit any venue or television production.
Rainbow Bigbottom’s success has been down to her natural desire to create a magical experience of all nationalities, ages, backgrounds and cultures; adding a sparkle to everyone’s day.
Ms Bigbottom lives at home in Buckinghamshire with her husband and son Barnaby, who continually inspires with his development and understanding of the world.
